A digital success story of the Swiss financial center and SIX

If eBill were a car, a hotel or a handbag, this story would make headlines around the world: Launched eight years ago by SIX and the Swiss financial center, eBill now has four million registered users. This milestone was reached in summer 2026.

This means that more than half of the adult population in Switzerland now uses eBill. Another milestone is already on the horizon for 2026: that’s when the platform will have processed its first 100 million invoices. It’s a realistic goal – in fact, 93 million invoices were processed in 2025, with an average growth rate of nearly 20% in recent years.

Over 100 banks involved

On April 19, 2018, the first Swiss bank introduced the new digital payment infrastructure. Ever since then, all we’ve seen is growth. Today, over 110 banks support eBill.

A key success factor is the broad participation of invoice issuers. We were able to convince major invoice issuers of the benefits of digital invoicing early on. Today, almost all well-known invoice issuers in Switzerland are on eBill, with more and more SMEs joining as well. On average, eBill users deal with almost seven different invoice issuers: from mobile phone providers and transport companies to insurance companies and tax authorities. In some cantons, you can even easily pay parking tickets via eBill – even though that doesn’t necessarily make you feel any better.

More than just paying invoices

Initially, the focus was – and still is – on digital invoice payment, but SIX is constantly expanding the eBill service: It is now possible to automatically add invoice issuers, make donations to verified NPOs directly through eBill with prior consent, split invoices, for example when multiple people co-manage them, or pay for online orders via eBill. And with the launch of eBill Direct Debit, the platform has recently been expanded to include a digital direct debit procedure that is already being used by the first financial institutions.

An “extraordinary achievement”

Christoph Müller, Head Banking Services at SIX, draws a positive conclusion.

He adds that the development of eBill aligns perfectly with the mandate of SIX: to provide a high-performance, secure, and uniform financial infrastructure for Switzerland on behalf of the banks.

eBill is a powerful example of how the Swiss financial center works together to create a modern, user-friendly digital solution that benefits everyone.
